Newsletters and Discussion List

Online Communication...

HoTCO maintains three vehicles for communication.

  • The first ... is our chapter e-newsletter. Published every month or two, it contains news of upcoming Centering Prayer related events in central Texas. To subscribe to our chapter e-mail newsletter, click through to our e-newsletter sign-up page and enter your email address.

    View our newsletter archives here.

  • The second ... is a chapter leadership e-mail list. Although anyone can join the list, it's mainly intended for people who lead prayer groups, lead introductory workshops, staff retreats, or serve the chapter in other ways. To subscribe, click through to our leadership e-mail list sign-up page and enter your email address.

  • The third ... is the Center-L mailing list. This list is for discussion of Centering Prayer and related topics, and is subscribed to by people around the world. The list is generally unmoderated and self-managed by the subscribers (although abusive participants will be removed). Although the list is hosted by the HoTCO chapter, we are not responsible or liable for any of the content on the list.

Purpose...The Center-L mailing list is for the discussion of Christian contemplative prayer, with a particular emphasis on the practice of Centering Prayer, which is based on the 14th century English text The Cloud of Unknowing and was developed into its present form by Frs. Thomas Keating, William Meninger and M. Basil Pennington.

Discussion of related contemplative practices, such as Lectio Divina, hesychastic prayer (e.g. the "Jesus Prayer") and so forth, is certainly encouraged. This mailing list is a vehicle for creating an Internet-based community of practitioners of Centering Prayer, as well as a method of outreach for those who are interested in getting more information on the subject.

What topics are appropriate for the Center-L list? Topics should bear some relevance to Christian contemplative practices and traditions, such as...
    • Questions or observations on the practice of Centering Prayer itself, or related practices.
    • The effects which Centering Prayer has had on, and the part it plays in, your life and general spiritual practice.
    • Helps or obstacles which have been encountered in your practice.
    • Other practices which may be conducive to general spiritual formation, such as journaling, silent retreats, etc.
    • Announcements of seminars, retreats or workshops on Centering Prayer or other contemplative practices, as well as reviews of such which subscribers may have attended.
    • Commercial messages, when related to the subject of the list, are not banned from this list, but must be reviewed and approved by the list owner before they are posted.

To subscribe to the Center-L list, click through to the Center-L sign-up page and follow the instructions.
